Ode to Poetry

I have no doubt that you were all aware that April is National Poetry month and have been busy putting pen to paper, creating verse. Well, I haven't but this is the last week of the month, and I don?t want to have to wait another year to be able to use it as an excuse to dig out a couple of old poems to throw in my column.

Here's a couple that won't make anyone forget Robert Frost, David Frost or for that matter, Jack Frost.

Roses are red
violets are blue
I'm not a very good poet
which you can probably tell by reading this

This one I wrote for my creative writing class in high school and was a favorite at Poets Night at the Stoneham Public Library. It was inspired by Johnny Carson's "Floyd R. Turbo, American" character.

War is Heck

Here we are in battle
snipers all around
paratroopers in the air
and commies on the ground

A Ruskie aims his gun at me
I shoot him in the face
but that don't stop him, he keeps charging
so I spray him with some mace

A Cuban grenade lands next to me
my gut lands on it with a crunch
but it can't hurt me any worse
than the K-rations I had for lunch

I hate commies, commies stink
commies are a drag
I'd like to chop one into bits
and stuff him in a bag

Here's a different take on a well known nursery rhyme.

There was an old woman
who lived in a shoe
who had so many children
she didn't know what to do

so she did what a friend did
who lived down the block
she sold her old shoe
and moved into a sock

OK, so they probably won't ever be taught in somebody's English lit class, but at least they don't have the word "Nantucket."
